Matt Leon signs with LA Angels

Liberty graduate Matt Leon signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Angels recently, culminating a fascinating chapter in his career at Seton Hall.

Leon joined Seton Hall as a walk-on his freshman year and ended his senior campaign as one of four unanimous Big East selections this past season.

The former walk-on had a stellar senior year breaking Seton Hall’s single-season record for saves, and climbed to second on the Pirates’ career saves and appearances list. He led the Big East in saves, appearances, games finished and games in relief.

Liberty head coach Andy Pitsilos was happy to see one of his former aces get an opportunity in the big leagues.

“Matt signing with the Angels is a testament to his heart and work ethic,” Pitsilos said. “He has turned himself into a dominating pitcher.”

Leon recorded 12 saves, 34 strikeouts in 30.2 innings, and a team-best 1.17 earned run average this year for Seton Hall, his senior year. He was slated to join one of the Angels affiliate minor league teams last week.
