Becahi advances in states

Three triples by Jersey Shore in the first inning could not scare Bethlehem Catholic away as the Hawks fought back from a 3-0 deficit to score an 8-3 victory in the first round of PIAA State Class 4A softball playoffs on Monday in Turbotville, Pa.

In the fifth inning, Becahi’s Morgan Christine led off, getting hit by a pitch, and Addison Roche, Tatum Kresley, and Jess Indelicato all singled. Alyssa Jiminez slapped, but a run scored, and Tasha Miner singled, putting the Hawks ahead 4-3.

In the seventh, Catelynn Erickson led off with a base hit and scored on an error from a bunt by Kresley. Jiminez’s bunt single scored Kresley, Miner’s single scored Jiminez, and a base hit by Julia Sledz scored the Hawks’ eighth run.

Becahi coach Rich Mazza made a pitching change in the middle of the third inning, bringing in freshman Jennifer Slanovec, who had 10 strikeouts, two base on balls, a single, and a double.

Indelicato went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, Miner went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Sledz went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.

The Hawks will move on to the quarterfinal on Thursday at a time and place to be determined.
