Bethlehem Catholic’s volleyball team captured the District 11 2A title last week by knocking off Southern Lehigh.
It wasn’t easy for the Hawks against the Spartans, who made the playoffs despite just two victories this season. Solehi took the first two games of the match, 29-27 and 25-23, leaving the Hawks looking up at a 0-2 deficit.
But from there Becahi took over, winning the next three games convincingly: 25-11, 25-14 and 15-8.
Nick Hulbert had 18 kills and Nick Greenawalt added 11 kills. Jacob Sledz had 17 digs with Mike Spirk adding seven aces in the victory.
Becahi had two weeks off before taking on Southern Lehigh, which could have factored in the first two games of the match. The Hawks were always possibly looking ahead to a rematch with Dock Mennonite in the 2A finals bracket tourney, after falling in five games last year.
As head coach Jeff Koch told Press writer Peter Car recently, the Hawks had some unfinished business after falling just two points shy of the state tournament.
“I think our potential match against Dock is something that is hard to ignore,” said Koch. “Although we haven’t talked about Dock with our players [before the Solehi match], my players have to have that hunger getting ready to burst at that potential rematch. Being two points away from making the state tournament last year is something that still sits with us. We are hoping to finish what we couldn’t from last season.”
Unfortunately for the Hawks, they fell to Dock 3-0 back on May 24 to end their season.
However, the District 11 title is their fifth over the last seven years.
