Pates advance to finals

Liberty and Freedom played on Memorial Day in the District 11 6A baseball semifinals at Lehigh University.

The Patriots knocked off Pocono Mountain West and will move on to face Parkland, which defeated the Hurricanes.

Freedom got off to a fast start and set the tone early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning before adding two more in the top of the seventh for a 5-0 win.

Alec Huertas, who walked off the Pates in the team’s last game with a home run, this time struck out 10 to pick up the win. David Smith came on in relief and fanned three.

Smith also had a double and an RBI in the game and Tim Healy and Nick Stannard also drove in runs in the win.

Meanwhile, Liberty fell behind early against the Trojans before falling 7-5.

PHS scored a run in the first and four in the third, eventually pulling ahead 6-0 after four. LHS tacked on three runs in the fifth but Parkland added an insurance run in the sixth to make it 7-4 at the time.

Marcus Nales had two doubles and an RBI and Justin Schmoyer drove in two while Ben Piripavel and Grimaldi Gonzalez added an RBI.

Freedom and Parkland play in the finals Wednesday at 4:30 at Lehigh.
