Henning in ESU project
Mason Henning, of Bethlehem, was among several East Stroudsburg University students who participated in a service learning trip during break.
In March, the students volunteered 312 service hours, from sunrise to sunset, at Virginia State Park in Cumberland, Va. They cleared hiking trails and campgrounds and rerouted hiking trails to redirect water and reduce erosion. The trip was a broad learning experience, with presentations by rangers on park management, environmental science, reducing carbon footprints and more.
The project was organized by the Student Activity Association.
Warnke participates at LVC
Katelyn Warnke of Bethlehem, an exercise science major, presented scholarly or creative work at Lebanon Valley College’s annual Inquiry symposium.
Heywood wins state Spirit of Hospice Award
St. Luke’s Hospice Worker Robert Heywood, of Tatamy, won the Spirit of Hospice and Palliative Care award at the Pennsylvania Hospice and Palliative Care Network annual conference this past month.
He was selected for demonstrating outstanding performance, sensitivity, respect and continuous excellence of service in hospice and palliative care.
St. Luke’s Hospice is dedicated to providing patients and their families with compassionate end-of-life care. The focus is on the care, not cure, and on quality and value of life, not the length.
McCadden awarded by McDaniel
Caitlin McCadden, of Bethlehem, was recognized at the April 29 Spring Awards ceremony at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md. She received The Case Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research.
The award was established in 2000 to honor Sam and Susan S. Case. It is presented to a sophomore or junior who is involved in scholarly research with a mentor professor, has achieved academic distinction, and emulates the Cases’ appreciation for the significance of research.
Fehnel on ESU nursing challenge
Kaitlyn Fehnel, of Bethlehem, participated as part of the East Stroudsburg University team in ESU Department of Nursing’s 15th annual Nursing Challenge on April 26 in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts.
The challenge was created by ESU Nursing Professor Dr. Laura Waters as a way for nursing students from across the region to compete while answering questions modeled upon the nursing licensing exam (NCLEX).
Nursing students from nine regional institutions participated. The University of Scranton’s nursing program team won first place. Their $500 prize was provided by the Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Evelyn travels for Maymester
Alexandria Evelyn, of Bethlehem, will participate in Belmont University’s Maymester / Summer Study Abroad program. The program provides students with the opportunity to expand the classroom beyond the traditional experience, visiting historical sites and spending time experiencing new cultures.
United Way co-chairs named for 2018 campaign
David Shaffer, chairman of Just Born Quality Confections, and his wife Sue, have been named co-chairpersons of the 2018-19 United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley campaign.
The couple have convened a campaign cabinet of business leaders focused on workplace giving, as well as a new grassroots community cabinet. The group will engage new United Way donors and focus on a broad-based community-wide campaign.
UWGLV’s program investments impact the lives of 60,000 people each year and create opportunities to improve the health, education and safety of everyone in the community. UWGLV raises money and invests in programs to increase the number of third-graders reading on grade level, decrease the number of food insecure residents and increase the number of seniors whose basic needs are met at home.

Counts recognized at Wesleyan University
Theresa Counts, of Bethlehem, was awarded the Plukas Teaching Apprentice Award for excellent service to the Department of Economics as a teaching apprentice; the Rich Prize, given to seniors whose orations are judged best in composition and delivery; and the White Prize for advanced undergraduate study in economics at a Wesleyan University spring prize reception. She formerly attended Moravian Academy.
Deegan receives Benfer Scholarship
Bethlehem resident Brigid Deegan, Muhlenberg College Class of 2019, received recently the Harry A. Benfer Memorial Scholarship. The award is presented to a rising senior in good academic standing who promotes goodwill and who has an appreciation for all phases of college life, those being the characteristics most evident in the life of Harry A. Benfer.
Devia co-creates new organization
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine student leaders, including Luis Devia of Hellertown, ‘18, recently developed a new organization to create opportunities and networking for under-represented in medicine students. The newly named Association of Multicultural Students in Medicine includes members of the school’s chapter of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students.
Berrios given Aramark Hospitality Award
Maria Esther Berrios of Bethlehem, received Penn College’s Aramark Hospitality Award. The baking and pastry arts major qualified as a school graduate who has maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher; has exhibited strong leadership and teamwork skills; has demonstrated excellence, professionalism and commitment; and who was previously employed by Aramark.
Wilkes recognizes Zawadi
Wilkes University student Nshimirimana Zawadi, of Bethlehem, received the Nada Vujica Memorial Award presented by Center for Global Education & Diversity. She was recognized at the extracurricular awards luncheon for her contribution to activities outside the classroom.
