’Canes Greta Stuckey grabs first in the 800

Liberty distance runner Greta Stuckey clinched the gold medal in the 800 meter run last Thursday at the District XI Class 3A Girls Track and Field Championships at Whitehall High School.

“It was good,” Stuckey said. “I knew [Katherine Ellmaker] was very close, especially the last lap. I could feel her right next to me, and I knew I had to go because my first lap was slower.”

Ellmaker, who is from Easton, came in second with a time of 2:19.25 to Stuckey’s time of 2:18.55.

“It was really tight at the start,” said Stuckey. “I was a second off [from leagues] and that was the second that I didn’t get back.”

Stuckey was also part of the Hurricanes’ 4x4 relay team, along with Rachel Byrne, Payton Shaffer, and Olivia Sahaydak, that won a fourth place medal after placing with a time of 4:00.97.

Liberty’s 4x1 relay team of Shaffer, Grace Mittl, Yamilet Ferrufino, and Gabrielle Phillips also medaled with a fourth-place finish with a time of 49.51.

Mittl and Ferrufino had third place finishes in the long jump (17-06.50) and the 300 hurdles (48.55), respectively.

Fellow Hurricane Eleni Prodes was the silver medalist in the javelin, throwing a distance of 121-07.

“I was really excited to come in here and compete, so I was coming in with a positive mindset. I’ve been doing it for four years, so it’s kind of ingrained in my head now, so I just do what I know,” Prodes said.

“I’m happy to make states, but I feel like I have more in me. Now, getting comfortable up in the 120’s again, I’m ready to fine-tune some things and hopefully that will bring everything together.”

Bethlehem Catholic’s Liz Lieb won two silver medals, one in the long jump with a distance of 17-11.25, and one in the triple jump with a distance of 38-00.00.

Freedom’s Lauren Charboneau placed fifth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:38.38.

In district team results, Liberty placed fourth behind Emmaus, Stroudsburg, and Easton.
