Liberty boys, girls take 3rd
Liberty’s track and field teams placed third at the East Penn Conference Championships where the girls scored 82 points overall and the boys scored 76 points overall last Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall High School.
Points were given for the top seven finishers in each event, and medals were awarded to the top four in each event.
Greta Stuckey was the only gold medal winner for the Hurricanes. The Liberty junior took first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.54.
“I decided I was going to go out really fast. I changed it up this time because I knew how fast the girls went out,” Stuckey said. “I was pretty stressed out, but I just knew what I had to do, really. I planned ahead of time. I had a race strategy in my head.”
Stuckey was also part of the 4x4 relay that placed second in 4:03.30, right behind Easton.
“We knew it was going to be close with them,” she said.
Other silver medalists for Liberty were Payton Shaffer in the 200 with a time of 26.02, Devon West also in the 200 with a time of 22.86, Yamilet Ferrufino in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.15, Christian Tackett also in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.44, and Eleni Prodes in the javelin with a throw of 121-06.
Third place medalists were Rachel Byrne in the 400 with a time of 59.71, Tackett in the 400 with a time of 51.34, Daeshawn Teague in the long jump with a distance of 21-09.00, Jaida Davis in the shot put with a distance of 33-09.75, and Trevor Harris in the shot put with a distance of 45-06.75.
“Really, in the beginning, I couldn’t get my foot around, so I was fouling, so on my third throw, I just got one in bounds to make it to finals, and I finally just started to let it rip,” said Harris. “It was just me; it happens every so often in my meets. I just have to come back. I’ll work on getting my foot across. I mean, I’ve thrown 48 feet. That’s what I have to focus on for next week.”
Winning fourth place medals were Chrys Hunter in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.98, Shaffer in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.68, Grace Mittl in the long jump with a distance of 17-04.75, Prodes in discus with a distance of 102-10 and Harris in discus with a distance of 136-03, Darlyn Fermin in the 1600 with a time of 4:31.03, Liberty’s girls 4x1 relay team with a time of 49.76, and Liberty’s boys 4x1 relay team with a time of 43.84.
In team results, Stroudsburg’s girls placed first and Easton’s placed second, and Parkland’s boys placed first and Nazareth’s placed second.
