Becahi track has good showing
Bethlehem Catholic’s girls track and field team placed fifth overall, and Becahi’s boys team placed fourth overall at the East Penn Conference Track and Field Championships last Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall High School.
Liz Lieb won two silver medals, one in the long jump with a distance of 17-08.25 and one in the triple jump with a distance of 37-01.50.
“It’s a best. I jumped 37’ 1 1/2 on my fourth and my sixth,” said Lieb. “I didn’t expect to jump as far today, but I did move my steps back a couple feet, so I think that’s what made all the difference. My coach had been telling me to run faster to get a farther distance, so that’s what I did today.
“It felt great. I’m really happy. I was not expecting to place at all. I think I was seeded maybe in the top ten but not top five.”
Zaheer Seabrooks was a silver medalist in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.15, and Bobby Kulp was a silver medalist in the high jump with a jump of 6-03.00.
“My PR is 6-06, but I wasn’t really feeling it today. I’m happy I got second, but I knew I could have done a lot better,” said Kulp. “[For districts] I’ll just make sure I get my steps better and mentally prepare.”
Maddie Wickel won a silver medal in the discus with a throw of 104-07.
“It feels amazing considering this is my first year doing track at Beca,” said Wickel. “I started going to Glen Thompson who coached Joe Kovacs, and I kept practicing, and then I hit my PR of 104-07 today. That was my last throw of the night. I just gave it my all. I pushed myself, I didn’t worry about fouling, I didn’t think about my feet, I didn’t think about my arms, I just did everything that was taught by Coach Lang and Coach Glen.
“I heard the number and I was like, that’s a joke, you’re kidding me, I can’t believe it. Just incredible.”
Winning bronze medals were Esiah Rosario in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.96 and in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.89, Joe Kurtz in the 200 with a time of 22.98, Emma Pfeiffer in the pole vault with a height of 10-00.00, and the boys 4x1 relay with a time of 43.61.
Fourth place medalists were Kurtz in the 100 with a time of 11.34, Cailey Spanitz in the pole vault with a height of 9-06.00, and the boys 4x4 relay with a time of 3:31.23.
In team results, Stroudsburg placed first for the girls, and Parkland took first place for the boys.
