Becahi tops K-Kids
During the regular season, Northampton was the only team to hold the Bethlehem Catholic softball team scoreless.
Through the first five innings of their East Penn Conference playoff matchup on May 14, it looked like the Golden Hawks were destined for the same result.
As it turns out, they just needed to bunt more.
Bunt singles by Natasha Miner and Julia Sledz keyed a sixth inning rally that propelled Becahi to a 6-1 victory. The Golden Hawks (16-4) advanced to play Liberty in the conference semifinals.
After five scoreless innings, Alyssa Jimenez led off the sixth with a hard-hit single. Miner and Sledz each laid down sacrifice bunts, but the Northampton defense was unable to field either of them.
With the bases loaded and no one out, Alexa Panuccio and Morgan Christine each ripped RBI singles to give the Golden Hawks a 2-1 lead. Jaden Spigner added an RBI groundout later that inning.
“My biggest objective was to put the ball in play and make good contact,” Panuccio said. “When I got up with runners in scoring position, I knew I had to do something to get a run in.”
Becahi tacked on another three runs in the top of the seventh inning using the same formula. Jimenez and Miner got on base to start the inning. Panuccio brought them home with a two-RBI single and Christine recorded an RBI groundout.
Starting pitcher Tatum Kresley scattered six hits and a walk in the contest. The K-Kids’ lone run came on a solo home run in the fourth inning.
After suffering an early exit from last year’s District XI playoffs, the Golden Hawks have their eyes focused on bringing home trophies this season.
“This team has big goals. We believe that if we play our best every game, we can make it all the way,” Panuccio said.
