Liberty looks to clinch district berth
Liberty learned some lessons last week, but they also put themselves in positions to make a run down the stretch.
The Hurricanes (8-5) went 2-1 last week with a win over Parkland in five games and a sweep over Dieruff, but suffered a midweek defeat to Bethlehem Catholic in four games.
With so much parity in the East Penn Conference this season, it’s no surprise to see teams taking each other down on a nightly basis and that’s what head coach Neiad Ammary is seeing from his group as they head down the final 10 days of the regular season.
“Each match is unique in its dynamics, and this year there is a lot of parity between teams,” Ammary said. “The result is that everyone is beating up on each other. The win over Parkland was a reflection of that. We have a lot of height up at the net and blocked really well against their smaller hitters. We did the same thing against Nazareth the previous week.
“The loss to Bethlehem Catholic had nothing to do with the win over Parkland. Bethlehem Catholic simply played better than we did. They happen to have strengths that correlate pretty well with our weaknesses, and we failed to find ways to compensate for that. It’s disappointing, but we learned a few important tactical lessons from that match.”
Liberty took another step toward clinching a district berth with Monday’s win in five games over Easton before taking on Whitehall (11-2) on Wednesday. They close out the week with Souderton and Pocono Mountain East (1-11). Two more wins should be enough for them to clinch a postseason berth, which would be the best case scenario, as they finish the season next week against Northampton (10-5) and Freedom (11-4).
“It will be a tough road ahead, but thankfully we’ve pulled out enough wins at this point to be in position to make the playoffs,” Ammary said. “We just need to win a few more. Once we’re in, we know that this year anything can happen.”
Freedom has won three straight since their loss to Whitehall last week and looks to stay in contention for an EPC playoff berth. The Pates have already clinched a district berth with matches against Allen (3-10) and Emmaus (12-0) this week.
Bethlehem Catholic (6-6) have lost four out of their last six. The Hawks got back on the winning end of things in Monday’s sweep over Pocono Mountain West.
They also face Parkland and Allen this week.
