Hawks trying to gain momentum

Bethlehem Catholic picked up a big win over the weekend and you can say the Golden Hawks really needed it.

The Hawks (6-7) were able to bust out for 16 hits in a 16-11 win over Freedom over the weekend to snap a two-game skid where they lost to sub .500 teams like Northampton (6-8) and Dieruff (2-11).

The win, to say the least, was big not only from the standpoint of playoff positioning, but also from a mental perspective.

“That was a tremendous win for us,” said head coach Mike Grasso. “We hit the ball really well and it was important for us to get a win after the tough week we had. It was good to get some momentum back.”

That momentum slowed during Monday’s action when they lost a 4-3 decision to Central Catholic.

With Liberty, Pocono Mountain East, Freedom and Allen left on the schedule for this week, Grasso knows every game will be monumental from here on out for the right to qualify for districts. “We have a tough end of year schedule,” said Grasso. “Our kids are fighting and battling out there. If we can get consistent hitting, we’ll be in good shape.”

Liberty (9-3) has rebounded from a three-game skid in the division with a three-game winning streak.

The Hurricanes outscored Allen, Wilson West Lawn and Pocono Mountain East 36-13 in their three wins last week and now shift the focus to another game-filled week, as they have five contests this week starting on Tuesday and ending on Saturday with Northampton, Becahi, Reading East Stroudsburg North and Allen.

Liberty is hovering in the sixth seed area of the EPC playoffs and need wins this week to improve their stance in the conference.

Freedom (9-6) has lost three straight following Monday’s 5-2 loss to Nazareth.

The Pates have Dieruff, Pleasant Valley and Becahi left on the week’s schedule, as they are battling Easton (10-1) and Liberty for the EPC Steel Division title.

The Rovers have at least a two-game lead over both teams in the conference record and have the bull by the horns heading into the final stretch run of the season to come away with the division crown.
