Becahi boys knock off Eastburg S

Bethlehem Catholic’s boys’ track and field team won its meet against East Stroudsburg South, 83-67, last Tuesday at BASD Stadium.

Zaheer Seabrooks won the 100 with a time of 10.90.

The Hawks swept the 200 led by Joe Kurtz with a time of 22.80, followed by Caden Giordano with a time of 24.30, and Malik Thomas who had a time of 26.50.

“I felt great. I think it was my best time this year,” said Kurtz. “Our sprinting team is the best sprinting team we’ve had since I’ve been at Beca, our 100 teams always take one and two in the 100, our hurdling teams take one, two, or three in the hurdles, 400 we’re top three, even relays, sprinting, we’re winning or taking top three.”

Matt Stianchi took first in the 400 with a time of 55.20, and Esiah Rosario placed first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.80.

Aaron Smith won the 3200 with a time of 11:19.00 in a photo finish against East Stroudsburg South’s Mahdi Bouchekouk.

Rosario was also part of the first-place 4x1 relay team, along with Issaiah Lopez, Kurtz, and Seabrooks. The Hawks’ time was 46.00.

“After the first leg, we were in the lead but we messed up the hand off,” said Kurtz. “I brought us back up to first, but then I messed up the hand off to the third leg and we were down by a little bit, but our anchor [Seabrooks] brought us back and we won.”

Seabrooks caught up to the Cavaliers’ anchor, who crossed the finish at 46.70.

“I think if we had a better hand off then he wouldn’t have had to chase the guy down at the end,” Kurtz said.

In throwing events, Christian Castelo won the shot put with a distance of 39-09.

In jumping events, Bobby Kulp took first place in the high jump with a height of 5-09.00, and Henry Pavis won the pole vault with a height of 11-06.00.

The Hawks swept the long jump where Mychael Althouse placed first with a distance of 18-09, followed by Michael Donchez with a distance of 18-05, and Kurtz with a distance of 18-05.

Kurtz is relatively new to jumping.

“It’s my first time doing long jump since eighth grade. I want to jump as much as 19 or 20 this year. Most of the best sprinters do jumping, so it’s good to do both,” Kurtz said. “Overall, I’d say our jumping and our sprinting is amazing this year.”

At the Allentown School District Invitational, Joe Kurtz took fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.59. Kurtz was also fourth in the 200 with a time of 23.59.
