Pates look to pick up some momentum

Tony Fabrizio knows that his lacrosse team can make a run at the end of this season, but he also wants them to bring their top effort every game.

That’s been a challenge for the Freedom boys’ so far this season, as the Pates are off to a 4-6 start to the season, but look to turn things up heading into the final weeks of the spring campaign.

The Pates find themselves in the midst of a little slump, losing to Moravian 13-5 last week, leaving Fabrizio scratching his head at the effort demonstrated in the loss.

“Besides our last game with Moravian Academy, I believe we have been playing well,” Fabrizio said. “Flat out, we did not show up or give any effort [against Moravian]. We talked at the end of the game, and are hoping this will be a one time occurrence.”

The Pates have a full slate this week with Nazareth, Liberty and Saucon Valley still on deck.

“Last season, our schedule was more spread out, so our record right now isn’t indicative to who we are as a team, or how we should end up,” Fabrizio said. “We have given fits to some of the elite teams in our league this year, and even being tied with Emmaus at halftime.

“We ran out of steam due to lack of depth, but it’s very telling the level of play our starters can play at. I believe we have the ability to go undefeated the remainder of the season, and win our division again.”

The Freedom girls continue to find ways to win with an 8-2 mark on the season after beating Northampton and Central Catholic last week.

Now, the Pates face a tough week with Parkland and Emmaus on the table.

The Pates held off Southern Lehigh 6-5 on Monday.

Liberty’s girls (3-5) have dropped four straight, but have battled in the losses.

They’ll face a similarly difficult stretch this week with Central Catholic, Parkland and Delaware Valley.

On the boys side, Liberty (0-8) and Bethlehem Catholic (0-7) are still trying to find their first wins of the season.

Something had to give in Tuesday’s contest between both teams. That matchup was past Press deadlines.
