LHS tennis still unbeaten
Liberty’s boys’ tennis team remained undefeated after a 5-2 victory over Northampton last week.
In one of the closest matches for the Hurricanes, Marc Burritt and Man Nguyen won at three doubles against Dan Fox and Nick Hudak, 6-3, 7-5.
Although Burritt and Nguyen have been playing doubles all season, it was the first time the two had been paired.
“We just found that out today,” said Burritt. “We saw the other team warming up, we looked at their form, and we figured out what we should do here. They were good players.”
The Hurricanes were down two games in the second set but made their way back to win.
“I think the communicating was good and also setting up for the serves, and I think the smash returns were a key component in this match,” Nguyen said. “We just kind of look at the ball when we hit it and visualize where we want to place the ball.”
Burritt and Nguyen agreed that the pairing worked well, including their sizing up of Fox and Hudak, and their consideration of the wind as a factor.
“[Placement] is one of the most important things we work on in practice,” Burritt said.
In the other close match of the day, Liberty’s Graydon Mascura and Doug Noriega lost to Sam Hanley and Jack Flood, 7-5, 4-6, 6-8, at number four doubles.
The rest of the matches won in two sets for the Hurricanes.
Louis Gruber defeated Andrew Hozza at one singles, 6-3, 6-1, David Lynn defeated Chris Nemeth at two singles, 6-0, 6-0, Gavin Snyder defeated Parker Hanushak at three singles, 6-0, 6-0, and at two doubles, Jacob Wong and Anthony Ronca defeated Alex Cabanela and Henry Hoffman, 6-0, 6-0.
