LHS girls track wins two
Liberty’s girls’ track and field team added two more victories to its record after defeating Northampton, 90-60, and Allen, 137-12, last Thursday at Liberty.
Top performers for the Hurricanes included Payton Shaffer in the 200 with a time of 26.0, Greta Stuckey in the 1600 with a time of 5:31.9, Hazel Deschamps in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.6, and Yamilet Ferrufino in the 300 hurdles in 49.5.
“We had a tail wind from the start, maybe up to the 150, and it just cut off, and I was a tenth of a second from p.r.ing.,” said Shaffer, whose personal record is 25.9.
The Hurricanes also swept all relays.
Shaffer, Gabrielle Phillips, Grace Mittl, and Rayne Wright won the 4x1 in 51.9, Stuckey, Ferrufino, Rachel Byrne, and Alicia Rodriguez won the 4x4 in 4:15.5, and Belle Weikert, Grace Haas, Faith Grube, and Madison Drager won the 4x8 in 10:56.1.
“I used to be first leg in the 4x1. We’re just going to mix it around till we feel like we’re really confident with this,” said Shaffer. “There’s always a chance to beat a school record, there’s always a chance to qualify for districts and leagues. There’s always another goal. And a P.R. is something you want.”
In jumping events, Mittl took first place in the long jump with a distance of 16-05.00 and in the triple jump with a distance of 31-08.00.
In throwing events, Eleni Prodes placed first in the discus with a distance of 89-08 and in the javelin with a distance of 101-08.
The Hurricanes had a one-two-three finish in the shot put led by Jaida Davis whose distance was 31-07.00, Khiya Punter whose distance was 27-03.00, and Merve Okumus whose distance was 25-10.50.
