Hurricane baseball is undefeated

Liberty is looking to continue their undefeated start to the season this week with a slate of three games aimed to keep them atop of the East Penn Conference, as well as maintain their status as the only undefeated team in District 11.

The Hurricanes (6-0) boosted their confidence with last week’s 8-2 victory over Parkland (5-1), giving them their biggest win of the season.

For head coach Andy Pitsilos, being able to beat a program like Parkland was just another indicator at how good this year’s team can end up being.

“It was a good week for us and we were tested by Parkland and we passed the test,” said Pitsilos. “Anytime you can beat a well coached and highly talented Parkland team, there will be a boost of confidence that we can play with anyone.”

With Allen (2-5), Pocono Mountain East (3-2) and Freedom (6-2) on the docket this week, Liberty will have a chance to extend their undefeated run through the midpoint of the season.

Keeping the team focused is now the task at hand, as the more wins that pile up, the higher the risk of a mental lapse can occur for a relatively young team.

“We can’t let our guys get too high on themselves and remember what got us to this point,” Pitsilos said. “We’ve had good pitching with good defense and disciplined hitting. If we can get better from here, we could end up being very good, especially for a young team.”

Freedom would love to be the first team to knock off the Hurricanes this year, if they get that opportunity this Friday night when both teams square off at 6:45 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park.

After opening the season with five straight wins, the Pates have lost two out of their last three games, with the latest defeat coming at the hands of a 13-4 loss to Whitehall last Thursday.

The Pates have one of their toughest week’s on the schedule with Emmaus (7-1), Bethlehem Catholic (3-2) and Liberty this week.
