So far, Northampton’s baseball team couldn’t ask for anything more.

The Konkrete Kids are off to a 3-0 start and have did it in grand fashion. They have outscored their opponents, 38-2, and already have squelched any preseason doubts.

Their last win was a 10-0, five-inning, one-hit, victory over rival Catasauqua in which Cole Rufe and Jared Hunsberger combined for the shutout. Rufe struck out 11, and he and Hunsberger held the Roughies without a hit for eight innings.

“Cole Rufe was very good on the mound,” said Kids’ head coach Mick Sugra. “He didn’t give up a hit until the fifth.

“Offensively, we did some good things. We scored two runs in the first with two outs, and three runs in the fourth with two outs.”

In the game, the Kids had four extra-base hits, pushing their total to 14 in three games.

Timmy Antigua and Isaac Tucker each knocked in a pair of runs, and Brittain Shander, Kyle Morin, and Andrew Kovalchik each added one against Catasauqua. The ongoing production of the quintet has been a major reason for the Kids’ early success. The Kids also have thrived with their extra-base hits.

“We have been hitting the ball well as an overall team,” added Sugra. “Our guys are never giving up on an inning even with two outs and that is a good mindset to have.

“We had 27 extra-base hits in 22 games last year, and we are half way there this year.”

The Kids will have their first test of the season when they met undefeated Emmaus (3-0), who is considered a favorite by many in the highly competitive Skyline Division of the East Penn Conference (EPC).

From there, the Kids will travel to Allentown Central Catholic Saturday and Dieruff Monday.

With the three-man staff of Rufe, Hunsberger, and Mike Ettl along with a potent and consistent offensive attack, the Kids will be a main contender in the EPC and are in a good position to top their 15-win mark during the regular season a year ago.

“We really focused on out hitting during the offseason to get the max out of our swings,” said Sugra. “If we stay focused on our strengths, we have a lot of potential offensively. Our starters have done a great job and we have some depth with our pitching.
