Liberty girls fall to Red Rovers
Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom’s softball teams won their season openers last Wednesday, but Liberty lost its first of the season against Easton 1-0.
“I thought we played an outstanding game,” said Hurricane coach Sam Carrodo. “Everything we told them to do, they did it and more. We just didn’t score the runs.”
The Hurricanes left the bases loaded in the fourth inning after Liberty center fielder Mikayla Ruppert was intentionally walked.
“You want to win, and we had every opportunity in the world to win that game,” Carrodo said. “It’s my job to get them in, and I didn’t do my job. I should have been a little bit smarter on a couple of the at bats, I feel we should have bunted in a couple situations that we didn’t, so I’m going to take the heat on this one.”
The Red Rovers scored in the third inning after Lina Ramos doubled.
Alexa Berger, one of Liberty’s captains along with Mikayla Ruppert and Brooke Zigmund, also had a double in the first inning.
“Our captains did things today that were extremely fantastic. We had some breakdowns with some girls who made some mistakes or who had some problems, and those girls flocked right to them and calmed them down,” Carrodo said. “The experience they gained today is going to carry them so far this year.”
Carrodo was also pleased with the pitching of sophomore Paige Zigmund.
“I was excited to get back on the field. I just didn’t want to think about it,” Zigmund said. “We talked about how it’s our first game, and it’s Easton, and they’re obviously good, and just to come back strong tomorrow against Pottsville.”
Senior Kira Kuhns made her catching debut against Easton, having last played some softball her sophomore year.
“She’s good. I played with her when I was little so she knew me and how I pitched,” said Zigmund.
Bethlehem Catholic traveled to Parkland last Wednesday when they defeated the Trojans 2-0.
Tatum Kresley was the winning pitcher, and Alyssa Jiminez and Jaden Spigner had an RBI each.
Freedom hosted Allen and defeated the Canaries 15-0 in three innings.
Juliana Presto was the winning pitcher, and Brenna Ortwein, Taylor Resetar, Maddie Sheffer, Makenzie Smith, Glorianna Potenza, and Julia Roman had RBIs for the Patriots.
This Friday Becahi will host Liberty, and Freedom will host Dieruff.
