Young Liberty team hungry for success
Liberty’s 2017 spring was one for the record books. Now it’s time for their encore.
Coming off a 25-4 district championship campaign and a run to the state semifinals, Liberty comes back looking for more in 2018 with another highly talented, but young group under head coach Andy Pitsilos.
Last year’s win total was the best in school history, which came to a close in the PIAA 6A semifinals with a 12-0 loss to Pennsbury.
Now, Pitsilos enters this season with a young core returning, looking to defend their district title.
After losing most of their starters from a year ago, the Hurricanes will rely on the talented youth in the program to keep their expectations high.
“Our outlook and expectations are the same as they always are,” Pitsilos said. “We expect to be successful and will strive to win our division, then the league, then districts and compete in states.”
The veteran group returning for the Hurricanes include David Bertolotti (Sr-3B), Ian Dougherty (Sr-P/OF), Grimaldi Gonzalez (Sr-1B/P), Ben Piripavel (Sr-OF) and Justin Schmoyer (Sr-2B).
The underclassmen that return are Jack Borneman (Jr-C), Marcus Nales (Jr-SS), Jake Kraihanzel (Jr-P/3B), Elijah Lesley (Sr-P/OF), Antonio Zabala (Jr-OF/P), Caleb Tereska (Jr-OF/P), Jack Rothenhausler (Fr-P), Ryan Diehl (Jr-P), Gabe Rodriguez (Jr-P), Todd Erney (Jr-P/3B), Caleb Gross (Jr-P/2B), Jack Lees (Jr-1B) and Chase Marsteller (Jr-C).
“We are a young group, losing all of our starters but one, but a talented group,” said Pitsilos. “As long as we play disciplined, unselfish baseball, we can be very good. There will be growing pains but at the end, we should be better than how we are in the beginning.”
