Pates will lean on their leadership

Freedom High School softball coach Nora Lorady will be looking to seniors Julia Roman, Maddy Sheffer, Leah Thomas, and Samantha Barton for necessary leadership for the 2018 season.

“We have really good leadership, and good speed, good hitting. A bunch of them are out hitting on their own today,” said Lorady, the day after last week’s snowstorm. “They will be helpful in our success. We’re pretty aggressive and we’re ready.”

Roman will play center field, Sheffer will be at first base, Thomas will be at shortstop or second base, and Barton will play right field.

Juniors Taylor Resetar and Alexa Fancera are returning, Resetar in left field and Fancera at shortstop or second base.

Sophomore pitcher Juliana Presto is also returning along with Glorianne Potenza who double rostered last year.

“They’ve thrown really well in scrimmages. Juliana grew. She’s much taller. They’re doing a good job in the weight room,” Lorady said.

Sophomore Makenzie Smith and freshman Matison Piripavel will catch or play third base for the Patriots.

“Madison and Makenzie work really well together,” said Lorady. “Everybody will be pushing each other to do well.”

Freshmen Corinn Gill, Brenna Ortwein, Gabby Glick, and Hailey Sniskey are also on Freedom’s varsity roster.

Scrimmages with Northern Lehigh and Notre Dame Green Pond gave the Patriots good practice and Coach Lorady good insight.

“I think we’re going to do well. Some freshmen made nice hits. Our goal is to be aggressive,” Lorady said. “We made some basic plays, which we couldn’t do last year.”

Freedom’s season opener is scheduled for Wednesday at home against Allen, but that is dependent on field conditions, as is a game against Pen Argyl.

“I don’t see them happening,” said Lorady.
