Because the Liberty Hurricanes are a team with not as much varsity experience as others, Coach Sam Carrodo and his staff will be working on maturing the team during the 2018 season.
“That’s going to be the goal, to get them ready for the next two years,” Carrodo said. “We’re going to win some games; just maybe not a district championship.”
Returning for the Hurricanes are seniors Mikayla Ruppert, Apryl Cruz, Kyla Benner, and Brooke Zigmund.
Kira Kuhns, also a senior, is a relative newcomer, who played some softball her sophomore year.
Sydney Tomac, a junior, is also returning.
The rest of the Hurricanes’ roster consists of sophomores Samantha Taylor, Alexa Berger, Paige Zigmund, Jehlani Wiltcher, Payton Moll, Julie Curti, and Kat Borda.
“They’re an athletic bunch of kids, but very young,” said Carrodo. “We’ve only had one day to practice outside, and our scrimmage was canceled against Palisades.”
The Hurricanes spent the rest of their practice time inside the gym.
“You can simulate some stuff inside, but the outfielders are hurt the most because you can’t simulate that,” Carrodo said.
Outfielders for the Hurricanes are Ruppert, Tomac, and Moll.
Paige Zigmund will pitch, along with Tomac and Kyla Benner.
Infielders for the Hurricanes are Cruz, Benner, Brooke Zigmund, Taylor, Berga, and Borda.
Liberty’s first game is scheduled for this Wednesday against Easton at Liberty, pending field conditions.
