Hawks eyeing a return to postseason

Mike Grasso will be celebrating a milestone of coaching his 900th baseball game this season, but he hopes his Bethlehem Catholic squad can celebrate a postseason berth in his 31st year at the helm of the program.

The Golden Hawks finished 6-15 last year, but should be in position to improve on that mark with a more experienced group.

They’ll need every win they can get in the EPC’S tough Steel Division, as the Hawks look to get back into the postseason.

Grasso is confident in this year’s group, as they look to bounce back from a down year.

“We have great leadership and it’s going to be key for us to avoid mistakes early,” Grasso said. “Another key will be how some of our young guys can get up to speed with the varsity game.”

The Hawks will be led by a senior cast of Ethan Cantelmi (OF), Grant Hershman (P-IF), Sean Huff (OF), Patrick Mattes (P-IF-OF), Jaden Weida (P-IF), Craig Williams (P-IF) and Javon Clements (P-OF).

A junior group consists of Anthony Indelicato (P-IF-OF), Nate Petke (IF), Stafan Rollins (P-OF), Matt Moyer (IF-P), Joe Peacock (C-OF), Cole Roche (OF), Kevin Yusella (OF).

Sophomore Kris Morrow (IF-P) and freshmen Matt Martinez (C-IF) and Hunter Cantwell (C-IF) also figure to have prominent roles this season.

“We have four senior pitchers and three of them will be starters, so we should be pretty good there,” said Grasso. “I think the guys that are coming back will give us more offense than a year ago. I feel like this is a more balanced team than last season’s. We just need to score more and let our pitching and defense close out games. I feel like this group is confident that they can do that.”
