Freedom’s boys’ tennis season begins this week with Matt Potts as the Patriots’ new head coach.
Potts is a tennis instructor at Northwood Racquet Club whose grandfather was Joseph McIntyre, Freedom’s first principal.
“I never coached high school tennis before, but I coach all the high school players [at Northwood], and I thought it would be fun,” Potts said. “I like building things, and I think we have a team that will be good.”
Freedom will have its first match against Northampton with Justin Szaro playing at number one singles, Paris Chand playing at two singles, and Advay Deshmukh playing at number three singles.
“With the weather, we haven’t had good time to practice. Last Monday was the first day,” said Potts.
Matt Mullen and TJ Schaeffer will team up at number two doubles, Zach Chomitzky and Shivam Chand will be at number three doubles, and Matther Vera and Fahim Parker will play at four doubles.
“It’s been tough because it’s been so cold and windy, but I think we’ll be OK,” Potts said. “They seem into it.”
Brian Gerra and Max Mehta are also part of the Patriots’ tennis team.
“I’m looking forward to just getting out and playing,” said Potts, “and seeing how they respond to competition.”
Freedom’s first home match is scheduled for Thursday against Allentown Central Catholic.
