LHS, FHS wrestlers gear up for districts
Survive and advance.
That’s the name of the game for wrestlers this weekend when the District 11 3A tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes are looking for an encore from their district duals performance, while the Patriots are hoping to make a splash in the individual postseason en route to pushing competitors on the road to Hershey.
For the host Hurricanes and head coach Jody Karam, there’s a good chance he’ll have some of his lightweights in the finals, specifically, Tal-Reese Flemming and Matt Maloney.
“I think 106 through 132 are all solid weight classes for us,” he said. “Our middle through upper weights have improved and all are very capable of advancing to regionals. Last year we had seven wrestlers advance to regionals, so I think that number is our goal.”
Liberty’s lineup for this weekend will include Tal-Reese Flemming (106); Matt Maloney (113); Sebastian Mateo (120); Travis Brown (126); Mikey Torres (132); Jason Rezac (138); Joe Barbella (145); Danny Santiago (152); Eli Santiago (160); Josh Talijan (170); Damen Moyer (182); Kevin Hennessy (195) and Jake Ahmad (220).
The Hurricanes will be without Jaden Freeman at heavyweight due to a broken hand, which does hurt their chances in the team standings, as Freeman certainly would have medaled
Freedom’s lineup for this weekend includes Luis Vargas (106); Connor Huber (113); Echua Caban (120); Jacob Garcia (126); Gianni Palaios (132); Andrew Evans (138); Ben Huber (145); Andrew Youwakim (152); Erik Glastahl (160); Marco Augello (170); Jared Jenkins (182); Max Marrero (195) and Johnathan Ferrer (220).
“Realistically we think four to five wrestlers can advance to regionals,” said Pates head coach Brandon Hall. “We think Vargas, Jenkins, Huber and Marrero can make some noise. Evans and Ben Huber have wrestled well this year and are highly motivated to make a run to Hershey.”
