Hawks look to create new district champs

Bethlehem Catholic doesn’t have any returning district champion wrestlers heading into this weekend’s District 11 3A tournament, but the odds the Golden Hawks don’t come away with any champions this week are close to slim to none.

Becahi enters round one of the individual postseason as favorites to come away with the team title, but the hypothetical question is how many champions can they crown when action culminates Saturday night at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium?

Fresh off winning the state dual meet title two weeks ago in Hershey, the Hawks now set foot on the final phase of the season with high expectations.

“Expectations are high obviously after winning states,” said head coach Jeff Karam. “We’ve competed against these schools during the season and I expect us to be right there at the top. It’s really a matter of staying as healthy as we can.”

Karam is hopeful to advance all 13 wrestlers to regionals and is set to put out a formidable lineup when action gets underway Friday afternoon. Competing for the Hawks at their respective weights are Matt Mayer (106); Dillon Murphy (113); Matt Lackman (120); Kenny Herrmann (126); Jared Papcsy (132); Ryan Anderson (138); Cole Handlovic (145); Luca Frinzi (152); Mikey Lewis (160); Joey Kurtz (170); Tavion Banks (182); Robert Spezza (195); Nate Andrew (220) and Jase Crouse (HWT).

“I’d like to think all of them have a chance to advance to regionals but that’s how I approach things with our guys,” said Karam. “We have no returning district champs, but I’m hoping on Saturday night that changes.

“Matt Mayer has a chance and I can’t count him out. Our guys at 113, 120, 126, 132 are in really tough weight classes but all of our guys have a shot to be there. Ryan Anderson is probably a favorite at 138. Luca Frinzi and Mikey Lewis have a shot and obviously Tavion has a chance at 182. Robert should be one of the top seeds at 195, so we have a bunch of guys with the ability to come away with gold medals.”

After slowing things down last week in the practice room, Karam expects the intensity level to pick up this week with medals on the line.

“The anxiety that goes along with the team postseason and all the pressure that came with it had us scale things back last week,” he said. “So we just worked on some things technically. Now this week coming up we’ll go a little harder. Key thing is just to stay healthy and keep our conditioning up.”
