LHS boys top PME
Liberty’s boys’ swim team celebrated a senior night 98-60 victory over Pocono Mountain East last Friday at Liberty.
Robert Negron, Chris Chambers, Omar Mohammed, and Jase Smith led off with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.85.
Negron took first place in the 200 free in 2:02.11, and Evert won the 50 free in 21.71 and the 100 free in 49.15.
Kellen Rogers placed first in diving.
“The front double pike is probably the newest one that I’ve done. It ended up being a lot better than I thought it would be,” Rogers said. “Everyone, I’m pretty sure, got a six or above, which is good.”
Rogers and Sergio Alvarez, who placed second last Friday, were also looking toward the EPC Diving Competition.
“We’ve been practicing newer dives, dives that we haven’t done before or trained for, for the 11-dive meet,” said Alvarez. “My forward one-and-a-half, my twisters, I know most of them. I’ve been doing them for four years. I know they’ll come out good.”
The Hurricane divers lost some practice time this week with weather issues, HVAC issues in the natatorium, and a swim meet.
“I’m nervous because we didn’t have a lot of time to practice this week, so I haven’t practiced all of my dives,” said Rogers. “The back double, the reverse one-and-a-half, and the front double, I think, are going to be fine. I’m really stressed about the reverse double because I haven’t touched that in probably a month.”
After the diving event on Friday, the Liberty seniors and their parents were introduced, as well as seniors from Pocono Mountain East’s team.
“I’m kind of really bummed that the season’s almost over because even though it’s really stressful, it’s ending too soon, even though it’s been four months, but it always feels like it’s too soon, and I really like the people on our team. Regardless of how good they are, they’re really nice people, so I’m going to miss a lot of them,” Rogers said.
In the 200 free relay, Chambers, Negron, Smith, and Mohammed placed first in 1:32.53.
Mohammed won the 100 fly in 1:00.78, and Yousef Ismail won the 500 free in 5:33.31.
The Hurricane boys had a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke with Smith placing first in 1:01.74, John Jones placing second, and Ismail taking third.
