Pates boys lose close meet

Freedom’s boys’ swim team lost its second close meet in a week to East Stroudsburg South last Thursday 86-81.

The Patriots’ 200 medley relay team was disqualified after what would have been a first place finish for Freedom.

In individual events, Danny Connelly won the 200 freestyle in 2:02.47, and Jack Runco won the 100 free in 56.68.

The Patriots also had 1-2 finishes in the 500 free by Al Bell and Spencer Smith, respectively, and in the 100 backstroke by Colin Burnette and Dominic Fresoli, respectively.

Bell was outtouched in the 100 breaststroke by East Stroudsburg South’s Kevin Oliver, who had a time of 1:05.08 to Bell’s time of 1:05.20.

Smith, Burnette, Grayden Hogan, and Bell ended the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:37.33.

Also last week, the Patriots fell to Southern Lehigh 111-58.

Connell won the 200 IM in 2:18.82, and Smith placed third.

Bell took second place in the 50 free, and Runco came in fourth.

“My best swim today was probably the 50 free. I usually get pumped because it’s only two laps, so you want to let out all your energy in a short distance. I didn’t go a best time, but I swam pretty hard,” said Runco. “Starts and turns are very important...the start is really the most important part of the race because that’s how far you can get out, and get an advantage, and get ahead of someone the easiest.”

In the 100 fly, Burnette placed second, and Hogan placed third.

Connell just missed first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.65 when the Spartans’ Hunter Smith touched the wall first in 5:28.11. Smith came in third in the same event.

Bell won the backstroke in 55.84, and Hogan came in second in the 100 breaststroke.

Burnette, Smith, Hogan, and Bell came in third in the 400 free relay to end the meet.

“The boys are good. As a team, we’re doing pretty well,” said Runco. “We could definitely work on some individual aspects, especially in the relays, some of the IM and stroke events, but otherwise I think we’re doing pretty well.”
