Patriots fall to Central Catholic

Freedom’s boys’ swim team just missed a victory over Allentown Central Catholic, losing 89-87 last Thursday at Freedom.

The Vikings picked up extra points with a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free, a 1-2 finish in the 200 free relay, and a 1-3 finish in the 200 medley relay.

“It was down to tenths, [1:48.06 to 1:48.42] but we’ve been working on that medley,” said Freedom senior Spencer Smith. “I saw it Tuesday [against Allen], and I saw it tonight that a lot of the swimmers are giving their all regardless of how down we are or how ahead we are.”

The Patriots did have a first and second place finish in the 400 free relay with Colin Burnette, Grayden Hogan, Smith, and Al Bell coming in first at 3:35.94 and Danny Connell, Dominic Fresoli, Shawn Higgins, and Jack Rosen coming in second at 3:54.97.

“It’s a little bit of pressure,” said Hogan. “I came right out of the 100 breaststroke so I was tired and I kind of felt bad for Spencer. I extended [the lead] a little bit.”

Hogan won the breaststroke in 1:07.26.

“Grayden and I swim together in the medley relay, and in that 400 free relay ... so we’ve come to know each other and what each other swims and push each other to do really well,” Smith said. “I think it’s one of the harder events because it’s at the end of the meet and you’ve swum a whole meet.”

Hogan also won the 200 IM in 2:18.30.

Burnette took first place in the 100 butterfly in 57.27 and in the 100 backstroke in 57.76, and Bell placed first in the 500 free in 4:53.57.

Freedom’s girls’ swim team also lost to Central Catholic, 121-56.

Individual event winners for the Patriots were Abby Burnette in the 200 IM in 2:27.46 and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.60.

Sarah Gill placed first in diving with 202.20 points, and Leigha Evans placed second with 171.55 points.

Earlier in the week, Freedom’s boys defeated Allen 137-21, and Freedom’s girls also defeated Allen 100-71.

In relays, Burnette, Hogan, Smith, and Bell took first place in the 200 medley in 1:49.08, Rosen, Fresoli, Higgins, and Jack Runco were first in the 200 free in 1:46.98, and Runco, Burnette, Hogan, and Bell won the 400 free in 3:48.13.

Individual event winners were Runco in the 200 free in 2:07.19 and in the 500 free in 6:02.69, Burnette in the 200 IM in 2:10.27 and in the 100 backstroke in 58.19, Bell in the 50 free in 22.60 and in the 100 free in 48.53, Smith in the 100 fly in 58.61, and Sahil Shah in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.77.

“I’ve been trying since freshman year to hit a district time in-season,” said Smith. “I felt really smooth in the water, and I felt like all the effort I was putting into practice finally came out.”

Individual event winners for the Patriot girls were Emily Justice in the 200 free in 2:24.29, Burnette in the 200 IM in 2:27.17 and in the 100 fly in 1:07.24, Alex Koehl in the 50 free in 27.98, Gill in diving with 187.10 points, Linda Mao in the 100 free in 1:06.71 and in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.09, and Hallie Smith in the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.61.

In relays, Mao, Smith, Burnette, and Shannon Connelly won the 200 medley in 2:14,96, and Burnette, Emily Justice, Mao, and Grace Christiansen won the 400 free in 4:32.51.
