Liberty’s Jake Evert breaks pool mark

Liberty swimmer Jake Evert was feeling it during the Hurricanes’ meet against Whitehall and broke the pool record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.44 last Tuesday at Liberty.

“I did pretty well in the medley and the 50, so I was kind of feeling a 46, and I got a lot of rest last night, so I was feeling pretty energetic. I didn’t get as tired, and my coach has been giving me a lot of instruction like put my elbows up, flip earlier, when to breathe, and he’s been helping me out a lot, trying to get me to go 46 all season,” Evert said.

Evert only has .12 seconds to go to break Liberty’s school record held by teammate Robert Negron.

The Hurricane junior also won the 50 free in the meet against the Zephyrs with a time of 21.12 where there was a 1-2-3 finish for Liberty with Jase Smith placing second, and Grant Smith placing third.

“The 50s always crazy. You don’t even feel yourself. You just go all out. The 50 is like preparation all season. I’ve been sprinting a lot in practice and yesterday we were doing a bunch of 25 sprints. Coach Evan [Kocon] was pushing me a lot yesterday,” said Evert.

The Hurricanes had another 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free with Omar Mohammed taking first place in 5:32.12, Yousef Ismail placing second, and Ben Service coming in third.

Trevor Lenig won the 200 IM in 2:18.25, and Lenig led off on the 200 medley relay team that came in first and included Ryan Wycherley, Justin Lenig, and Mohammed. Their time was 2:01.61.

In the 200 free relay, Jase Smith, Chris Chambers, Mohammed, and Evert easily won the 200 free relay in 1:31.66.

“That’s a decent time for us,” said Evert. “It’s tough [to be that far ahead]. I always struggle with that. If I have somebody that’s beating me, I always go that much harder, so that’s why I’m looking forward to districts and states when there’s that kind of competition where I can push myself to the next level because it is always hard, but you just close your eyes, keep your head down, and go as hard as you can.”

Liberty’s boys won their meet against Whitehall, 144-124.

Liberty’s girls also defeated Whitehall, 151-116.

Sabrina Krotzer, Natalie Richardson, Samantha Taylor, and Kendra Smith opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.04.

Anna Lehr came in first in the 200 free in 2:05.09, Taylor placed first in the 200 IM in 2:18.44, and Smith took first place in the 100 free in 58.54.

In the 500 free, Maddy Drager took first place in 5:52.97, followed by Molly Gray, and Jackie Baker, all for the Hurricanes, and in the 100 fly, Liberty’s Kay Wetmore placed first in 1:02.34, Taylor was second, and Krotzer came in third.

Lehr, Smith, Krotzer, and Abby Mack combined to win the 200 free relay in 1:46.49.
