Families from The Swain School, 1100 S. 24th St., Allentown, volunteered for the national Day of Service Jan. 15, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
About 125 students and family members participated at five sites, including The Gress Mountain Ranch, Orefield; Flint Hill Farm, Coopersburg; Sixth Street Shelter and The Literacy Center in Allentown; and a site at Swain where volunteers created program materials for Equi-librium Therapeutic Horsemanship in Nazareth.
“In addition to the lessons we share with our students about Dr. King’s life and the important work he did, we wanted to use MLK Day as a time to reinforce our year-round commitment to volunteering and community service,” Dr. Shannan Boyle Schuster, head of the school, said.
The Swain community also collected donations for several of the sites.
