Sinkhole causes closure

Whitehall Township public works and utilities employees work to repair a sinkhole Jan. 20 at the intersection of Main Street and Columbia Avenue, West Catasauqua, which forced the closure of Main Street, south of First Avenue, and Lehigh Avenue, north of Race Street. According to a Jan. 23 news release from Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., the eye of the sinkhole is filled. UGI has completed its work for the homes on Columbia Avenue, and Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority has replaced the sewer line. The Northampton Borough Municipal Authority was expected to upgrade its connection Jan. 24, and the hole will then be backfilled and temporary paving placed over the area. To ensure the structural integrity of Lehigh Avenue and the Lehigh Avenue/Race Street retaining wall, township commissioners are reviewing legislation to ban truck traffic on North and South Lehigh Avenue, except for local deliveries, Hozza said.
