Freedom girls fall to Pocono Mt. East

Freedom’s girls’ swim team took a tough loss to Pocono Mountain East 94-86 last Tuesday at Freedom.

The Patriots were behind at the diving event, went ahead, but came up short in the end.

Pocono Mountain East scored 12 major points by taking first and second place in the 200 free relay.

Freedom’s Linda Mao and Abby Burnette won the 100 backstroke in 1:15.51 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.99, respectively, but the Cardinals’ first and third place finishes in the 400 free relay sealed the win for Pocono Mountain East.

“I’ll try and kick harder. My legs were not kicking during the medley,” said Mao, before the backstroke event.

Mao, Burnette, Sage Hillier, and Alex Koehl opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.99.

“At first, the buzzer didn’t work, so I thought, oh no,” said Mao, who dove in first. “Abby [Burnette] caught up a lot.”

Later in the meet, Hillier missed first place in the 100 butterfly by .58 seconds. Hallie Smith placed third in the same event. Smith also placed second in the 100 breaststroke.

Shannon Connelly took first place in the 50 free with a time of 31.96.

Sarah Gill won the diving event with a score of 186.45, followed by Fallon Tatlow and Leigha Evans, all for the Patriots.

Erin Madden took second place in the 200 freestyle and the 100 free, and Burnette was second in the 200 IM, followed by Hillier.

Emily Justice finished second in the 500 free, and Grace Christiansen was third in the 100 backstroke.

Last Thursday, Freedom’s girls lost to Pocono Mountain West 101-61 at Pocono Mountain West.

First place finishers for the Patriots were Hillier in the 200 IM with a time of 2:34.79, and Burnette in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.82, and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.59.
