Wrestlers go 1-4 at duals
The Parkland wrestling team didn’t have to travel last weekend as it held its annual Trojan Duals on Saturday. But the teams it hosted provided plenty of competition right in their own backyard.
Parkland went 1-4 at the Trojan Duals, its lone win coming against Exeter (32-30) in the second of five matches on the day. The Trojans came up short against Cumberland Valley (41-25), Council Rock South (34-29), Delaware Valley (34-30) and Northampton (41-23).
“It was tough to go 1-4 at the Parkland Duals, but I keep trying to stress that we keep getting better and our effort is there,” Parkland head coach Mike Ottinger said. “That is what you can control. You can control giving 110 percent, and hopefully come in and try to get a little bit better every day at practice and every match.”
The final win tally may be a bit deceiving as to how the Trojans actually competed on Saturday. Three of Parkland’s losses were decided in the final bout, so that 1-4 record could have nearly been 4-1.
“It was a good effort,” Ottinger said. “But three matches came down to the last match, and you would’ve like to see at least two go our way, and maybe all three. But it was a good effort. You look to improve and do the best you can moving forward.”
Individually, a number of Trojan grapplers had successful outings. Senior Zach Ortman and junior Brandon Kassis both went 5-0.
Ortman was perfect, finishing with two tech falls and three pins. Those falls came against Exeter’s Alex O’Neill, Delaware Valley’s Damien Lobello and Northampton’s Cole Kleppinger. Ortman, now 15-1, is just weeks removed from winning his 100th career match in the Liberty Holiday Classic.
Kassis pinned three opponents (Exeter’s Connor Lender, Council Rock South’s Collin Waterman and Delaware Valley’s Joe Casella), earned a tech fall, and closed out his day with a tough 6-2 decision against Northampton’s Logan Ninos.
“Zach Ortman is doing what you expect him to do,” Ottinger said. “And Brandon Kassis, they both went 5-0. But I think the guy that really stood out was Nate Weider.”
Kassis is now 12-3 on the season with Parkland set to embark on a tough week that includes matches against Nazareth and Pocono Mountain East. The Trojans will also wrestle in the Escape The Rock tournament this weekend.
But the one grappler who really impressed Ottinger at the Trojan Duals was the 220-pounder Wieder, who went 3-0. He edged Cumberland Valley’s Dontey Rogan (7-4) and Council Rock South’s Jon Weinstein (5-4) in the second and fourth matches, and then finished his day with a dominant 12-5 decision over Northampton’s Edward Confer.
“He beat one of the top 220 pounders in the district from Northampton, and he beat him pretty good,” Ottinger said. “That was probably a guy who stood out. It’s good to know where he is at now.”
Adam Lizak went 4-1 on the day, wrestling at both 182 and 195. Kevin Vrablik finished 3-2.
