Orefield students learn about air molecules

Orefield Middle School students recently spent time outdoors learning about lighter than air molecular physics. They learned as molecules are heated, their activity increases and they become lighter.

Heat a bag of air and it rises as compared to the relatively cool air surrounding the bag.

A hot-air balloon is a good example and there just happened to be one Oct. 6 at the Orefield Middle School.

According to science teacher Christy Schlaner, the hot air balloon is an annual event and it helps teach students not only about physics, but also about cooperation as they were charged with helping keep the balloon on track is it ascended and descended on its tether.

Has Anyone Seen My Balloon? Inc. of Bethlehem supplied the balloon used at the event.
