Eagle Scout honors borough police dog

Zachary Joseph Vilkauskas achieved the rank of Eagle Scout Oct. 14.

The Court of Honor ceremony was held at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville, which sponsors his troop.

Vilkauskas is currently attending North- ampton Area High School and will graduate in 2018.

He has earned 26 merits badges during his Scouting career, which began when he was in second grade.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 242, Vilkauskas has held several troop positions over the years, including historian, patrol leader, troop scribe, patrol quartermaster, troop guide and assistant patrol leader.

To earn the Eagle Scout pin, Vilkauskas, with the help of troop members, made a memorial for Northampton police K-9 Zoro. Zoro, a 9-year-old Czech Shepherd, served eight years as a Northampton Borough Police dog. Retired borough Officer John Mullner was Zoro’s handler from 2011 until 2015.

The memorial, which includes a plaque and image of Zoro, is located on the grounds of the Northampton police station.

“I would like to thank the Northampton Borough and police station for their support and help with my project,” Vilkauskas said. “I love animals.”

At the ceremony, Vilkauskas presented the Eagle Scout pin to his mother, Denise, and his father, Jeffrey.

Guest speakers LeRoy Brobst, Northampton borough manager, and Wendy Schlappich, office manager of State Rep. Zach Mako, presented citations of achievement.

Thomas Nichols, Scoutmaster, presented the Eagle Scout award.

The Rev. Brian Rajcok gave the invocation.

In addition to Scouting, Vilkauskas is involved in the school’s Envirothon and German Club.
