Parkland student and graduate nominated for outstanding newscast
Mary Dalton, a Parkland High School junior, and Graham Burrell, a Parkland graduate, are getting national recognition for a news story they produced as a school project.
“Cruising over Cancer” is a special production detailing Dalton’s experience with Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
The students coproduced the segment for their school’s Morning News Class with support from their teacher David Thomas.
Dalton and Burrell were two of more than 200 young professionals vying for the National Student Production Awards this year.
A panel of judges that included industry professionals and university professors narrowed the nominees down from a record breaking 1,500 entries country in 23 programming and craft categories from 19 regional chapters of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
The awards presentation was live-streamed from the Los Angeles campus of Emerson College on Oct. 3 and hosted by television personality, Tom Bergeron, star and host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.
Honorees received a NATAS certificate and a crystal pillar award, emblazoned with the world famous Emmy® logo for their school.
“Mary and Graham are stellar examples of the young talent that will continue to propel our industry and hold it to the highest standards,” said Courtney Brinkerhoff-Rau, NATAS Mid-Atlantic chapter president. “Our chapter is happy to have them representing the region at a national level and we are all so proud of these remarkable students.”
The pair also received a 2017 Student Production Award in the spring from the NATAS Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
They were honored in a ceremony at Neumann University alongside other students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
“Cruising Over Cancer” received an award in the category of News: General Assignment - Serious News.
