Arthur Hayden Anderson Sr.

Arthur “Andy” Hayden Anderson Sr., 85, of Whitehall, died Sept. 26, 2017, surrounded by his family.

Born Aug. 4, 1932, in Porus, Jamaica, he and his sister Chloe were the children of Arthur and Zoe (Amy) Anderson.

A very good student, he enjoyed sports, particularly soccer and cricket.

After graduating high school, he worked for the import-export office for the Jamaican government for 18 months, during which time he met and courted his wife-to-be Sybil (Angela) Anderson.

He applied and was accepted to Howard University, Washington, D.C., and immigrated to the United States.

He worked his way through college as a taxicab driver and, during summer 1959, he returned to Jamaica and married Angela of Rock Hall on Aug. 8, 1959.

He returned to Howard University for his junior year while his new wife remained in Jamaica to continue pursuing her nursing degree.

His wife joined him in Washington, D.C., shortly before his graduation in 1961, when he earned a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in geology.

He then started his graduate education at American University and during graduate school the couple started their family when Arthur Jr. and Althea were born.

He graduated with a Master’s degree in chemistry in 1963.

President John F. Kennedy was the graduation commencement speaker and he still has a copy of the speech.

He promptly received an offer of permanent employment from IBM, and moved the family to Kingston, N.Y.

Over their time in Kingston and subsequently in Woodstock, N.Y., he traveled extensively with IBM, and he and his wife became U.S. citizens.

He also picked up tennis, and became very passionate about the card game of bridge.

So much so, he became a LifeMaster Gold in the American Contract Bridge League and was able to lead bridge games and tournaments.

In 1985, he moved the family to Lexington, Ky., for his last role at IBM, and subsequently retired in 1990.

After retirement, he became involved in many things including his church, Trinity Hill United Methodist, joining the choir and the finance board, continuing to feed his passion for bridge by leading local games and tournaments, served as an adjunct professor at University of Kentucky in the chemical engineering department, and even found time to pick up the sport of golf.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the U.S., cruising throughout the Caribbean, and spending summers and holidays with their kids and grandkids.

In addition to his wife of Fogelsville, he is survived by children Arthur Jr. and wife, Dawn, of Fogelsville, Althea Anderson of Seattle, Wash., and Shelly Jackson and husband, Scott, of Puyallup, Wash.; grandchildren Chloe Jackson of Puyallup, Lauren Anderson of Fogelsville, and Gabriella and Brooke Jackson, both of Puyallup.

His memorial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at Calvary Temple, 3436 Winchester Road, South Whitehall, with a reception to follow.
