5 seek 4 seats on school board

Five candidates are vying for just four seats on Whitehall-Coplay School Board in the Nov. 7 municipal election.

William Fonzone Sr., Wayne A. Grim and George Williams are cross-filed on both the Democratic and Republican (D/R) ballots.

Joseph Shields is a Democrat (D).

George Makhoul is running on the Republican (R) ticket.

The Press asked the candidates the following question: How should public education be funded?

Only one candidate responded:

GEORGE WILLIAMS (D/R)

It is important to recognize that, by law, all students are entitled to a free and appropriate public education. Pennsylvania currently uses a statewide funding formula to determine the amount of support districts receive.

Tax dollars are a major contributor to school funding. This is important, so we have a sense of responsibility to our children’s education.

I believe education should be funded at the state level. We are challenged to balance the funding of curriculum, salaries and other expenditures while safeguarding our future needs. Part of my platform is to enhance the process of using our tax dollars efficiently.

Responses were not received from Fonzone, Grim, Shields and Makhoul.
