Kids get tough test vs. Emmaus

Northampton’s field hockey team was able to exact some revenge on their opening round playoff game, but the Konkrete Kids knew a bigger task laid ahead.

The ninth-ranked Kids downed host eighth-ranked East Stroudsburg South, 2-1, in overtime in the opening round of the District 11 Class 3A playoffs Monday afternoon. In the regular season, the Kids dropped a 4-1 decision to them on their home turf.

In the latest game, Abby Piotrowski scored the game-winner with 12:29 left in overtime on a penalty corner. Brynn Ehrlacher assisted on both goals.

Olivia Lorah gave the Kids a 1-0 lead before East Stroudsburg South netted the equalizer with 14 minutes left in the contest.

Ironically, Lorah, a freshman, and sophomore Lauren Schaller were inserted into the starting lineup when seniors Kayla Feist and Olivia Daniels were scratched from the lineup. Feist is dealing with a concussion and Daniels needed nasal surgery.

“I expected this kind of game,” said Kids’ head coach Carrie Saul. “They beat us up there during the regular season. We wanted to go up there and really push them.

“We played tough defensively and our backs did a solid job. Our goalie made some huge saves. But this is a game that we really wanted.”

With the win, the Kids were scheduled to meet top-seeded and defending state champion Emmaus in a quarterfinal-round game Wednesday afternoon. Emmaus shutout Northampton, 5-0, on Sept. 27.

Saul believes her young club has grown and isn’t fazed by the Emmaus’ mystique.

“Everybody wants to play and beat them,’” said Saul. “Our team has grown and they aren’t intimidated by them. We absolutely have grown as a team. We have gained more confidence along the way.

“We will have to force them (Emmaus) to make mistakes. Three of their five goals in the first game came off corner kicks. They will come at us and swarm the field. We have to pressure them high on the field and make every possession count.”
