Bench is dedicated in honor of Halal

A brook was babbling and birds were chirping on nearby trees during a sunlit morning Oct. 21. Family and friends had gathered for the dedication of a handsome bench on the Ironton Rail Trail (IRT) in Egypt as a tribute to Robert “Bobby” C. Halal’s life.

The June 5 death of Halal, a magisterial district judge since 2007 and a longtime constable, stunned the community.

More than 100 people were in attendance for the informal program on the IRT - organized to not only dedicate the bench but also to celebrate Halal’s 53rd birthday the previous day, Oct. 20.

The IRT, close to where Halal and his wife, Denise, resided, was in ways their second home. The couple spent much time together on the trail. Halal was an avid cyclist and a Yankees fan.

Jay Gilbert began the program with a prayer, offering words that depicted the essence of Halal - a man with compassion for others and with a quiet demeanor and an engaging smile.

Denise Halal fought back tears as she spoke of the times they biked and walked on the IRT.

As others spoke at the gathering - their words a mix of humor and serious contemplation - Halal’s mother, Stella, and Denise Hahal sat in quiet reflection on the bench, which includes a simple plate with Halal’s name and date on it.

Dominick Galluzzo, a close friend of Halal, said he spoke from the heart when he told of the bonds they shared with their families. He conveyed the joy they had taking trips together; the crowd laughed at the humor told.

He also spoke of the late Dan McNeill, another friend of his, who died Sept. 8.

Halal and McNeill “truly changed my life,” Galluzzo said, adding Halal was like a brother to him, a person who would give you the shirt off his back.

Dave Reph spoke of growing up with Halal in Egypt, playing football and continuing a genuine friendship over the decades.

Josh Wagner related when he and Halal discussed what Halal wanted to do with his life - becoming a constable and a district judge.

As the program came to a close, more than 50 white balloons were released into the blue sky. A red balloon with the words “Happy Birthday” on it was released by Denise Halal. It soared higher than all the others.
