K-Kids take second at district golf
The Northampton golf team got a little revenge at districts last week.
After a disappointing fifth place finish at the league meet a few weeks ago, the Kids rallied to take second at the District 11 meet.
The Kids shot 346, but were unable to knock off Liberty’s 324.
Andrew Hozza led the Kids with a 79. Hozza was also part of the individual tournament and finished in sixth, securing a top-eight spot which sends him to the regional round this week.
“Not as good as EPC, but good enough to get me to regionals,” Hozza said after his round. “Regionals was the goal today, getting top-eight. It’s definitely an accomplishment. Hopefully I can perform well there too and keep it going.”
Hozza’s round featured three double bogeys, a birdie and three bogeys. He said he only missed five greens in regulation and made most of the fairways, with the ones he missed being just off. On his birdie, he hit a 15-foot putt.
“70s is where I wanted to finish,” Hozza said. “80 is one stroke away. It’s not bad, it got me there. Mid-to-high 70 was range I had. Last year was my first year at districts and I didn’t do so well. Felt more comfortable going in this year. Four strokes lower than last year.”
Hozza was the lone Kid in the individual part of the tourney. Jack Test, Anthony Sawarynski, Devon Britton and Andrew Kovalchik also contributed to the second place team finish. Test shot 87, Sawarynski 89, Britton 91 and Kovalchik 106.
“The team did well, Northampton finished second,” Hozza said. “We came through, that’s good. Today was a bit of redemption, sixth in leagues to second now.”
In the girls competition, Kate Gogel and Jess Bretzik both shot 100 which tied for sixth place.
Collin Seip of Nazareth won the AAA title with a 74. Blue Mountain’s Sophie Orsulak won the girls portion with a 77.
Hozza saw his season end on Monday at regionals as he was unable to move on to states.
Hozza shot a 46-41 round of 87. He started on hole four with a bogey and then triple bogeyed hole five and followed with two more bogeys and another triple bogey over his first five holes.
