Pates fall to Easton

Freedom’s girls’ tennis team played through the season undefeated until last Friday when they fell to Easton 4-3.

“[Being undefeated] meant a lot because we were getting so much support from the school,” said two singles player Becky Packo. “Now that we’re not undefeated, it’s a little bit heartbreaking but at the same time, we’ll be 15-1, and if we have a shot at [Easton] at districts, I want payback.”

The match came down to number one doubles after Packo won at two singles, 7-5, 7-5, Twinkle Gupta and Megan Smith won at three doubles, 6-2, 6-0, and Meg Cavanaugh and Hannah Nicholls won at four doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

Packo and Natalie Sinai had not had the opportunity to play together at one doubles all season until Friday, but for good reason. They never had to because they defeated other teams by scores of 6-1 and 5-2 for the most part.

“I was upset a little bit [that we had to play],” Packo said.

The pair lost 3-6, 2-6 to Elessa Jacobs and Kaitlin Grogg.

Packo was the last of the Patriots to finish her individual match, which was against Grogg.

“I was trying to play to her backhand. That was her weak spot ... I made her run instead of me,” said Packo. “I knew I could win on her serve. I just had to keep my serve in.”

In other matches, Sinai lost at one singles 0-6, 0-6, Jessika Klo lost at three singles 1-6, 0-6, and Olivia and Anjali Chhugani lost at two doubles 4-6, 6-7 (3-7).

Next week, Freedom will have faced Liberty on Tuesday.
