LHS girls soccer splits two

Liberty’s girls’ soccer team went 1-1 last week with a 2-1 victory over Pocono Mountain West and a 2-1 loss to Northwestern Lehigh.

In the game against Pocono Mountain West, Liberty’s Merve Okumus scored a breakaway goal, assisted by Mia Del Corso with 22:21 left in the first half.

Pocono Mountain West tied the game when Kathrynn Gonzalez scored after an assist by Caroline Weirich with 12:40 left in the game.

Liberty came right back when Okumus scored the game winning goal from 25 yards out assisted by Kathryn Wescoe.

“I think we were just so fed up with our so called losing streak that we had extra motivation,” said Okumus. “I think the girls are playing in more comfortable positions, so I feel like we’re going to do better now.”

In the game against Northwestern Lehigh, Regan Gunn scored for the Hurricanes, assisted by Mia Del Corso with 23:00 left in the game.

“I just shot it, just tried to kick it to the corner,” said Gunn. “We picked it up today. Our offense did pretty well putting the ball through.”

Gunn thought the Tigers passed well in the back, but the Hurricanes, including co-captain Haley Jupina, handled them well.

“If you put a lot of pressure on them and go to the ball first, it was easy to get by them,” Jupina said.

Liberty coach Scott Rodenbach has been tinkering with the Hurricane lineup for weeks, and even though Northwestern won last Thursday night, he and the team were extremely pleased with the Hurricanes’ play.

“In the beginning [of the season], we had trouble marking defensively. Overall, every loss except Easton has been our mistake,” said Rodenbach. “We’re just not finishing, and we put undo pressure on our backs when we should have a couple goals.

“[Northwestern] scored on a restart, but it started a couple of plays back when we didn’t make a good first touch. It’s stuff like that.”

Liberty’s earlier loss to Bethlehem Catholic forced the Hurricanes to demand better of themselves.

“Beca was a low point. We’re too good to get beat. Now we’re in a dogfight to make districts,” Rodenbach said.

This week, Liberty will travel to Nazareth on Thursday after having faced Emmaus on Tuesday.
