After win streak, Kids fall to Easton
Northampton’s field hockey team admittedly had a good nearly two - week period. The Konkrete Kids had won their last five games, begin 4-0 last week.
However, the Kids’ has a temporary setback when they dropped a 7-1 decision to Easton Tuesday.
“We definitely hit a road bump,” said head coach Carrie Saul. “We were probably a little tired and it took a toll on our legs and chemistry. We had been playing well.
“Easton is a very good team. Give them a lot of credit. They play Emmaus this week and will give them a run for their money.”
Saul recalled how the Kids’ winning streak began with an impressive win over Whitehall.
“We had an exclamation point win over Whitehall,” added Saul. “We had a ton of offensive opportunities. Our defense had been playing well, and we had executed our corners.”
The Kids will begin their final two-week stretch with an overall 8-3 record, having a 6-3 mark in the East Penn Conference. Northampton was seated seventh in the District 11 Power Rankings.
Saul stressed how her young team has been gradually maturing.
“We lost some close games and we learned how to react from it,” she said. “They have become more mentally prepared. We have learned how to mentally prepare for games as well as in goal down situations.
“We also have a good chemistry here. The girls really have been stepping up their game and have been working well together.”
Saul stated the notable play from juniors Abby Piotrowski and Abby Wheeler. Piotrowski had seven goals and five assists, while Wheeler had four goals and five assists.
“Piotrowski has been playing well for us and she has really picked up her game,” said Saul. “Wheeler is a workhorse and she is all over the field. She is able to relate to different facets of the game.”
Sophomore goalie Cassie Borzillo also has been a steady force.
“With every game, she is gaining more confidence,” said Saul. “She has worked really hard and has produced some strong results.”
Having seven games left, Saul has been pleased with her team’s overall showing.
“Absolutely,” she said in response. “We were a young team coming in and we have progressed. We just have to keep playing hard and improving.”
