Volleyball rebounds after first loss

Northampton’s volleyball team is off to a fast start and the K-Kids hope to keep riding the wave of momentum throughout this week.

The Kids (6-1) endured their first loss of the season last week to, Freedom in four games before coming back to sweep Pocono Mountain West, East Stroudsburg South and Pleasant Valley.

For head coach Jessica Finlayson, things are going just about as good as they can at this point into the season.

“Our season is off to a great start,” said Finlayson. “The team is competitive and have shown that they are prepared to play at a high level.”

Falling to Freedom was the first real test of the season for the team, as Finlayson wanted to see how they would bounce back.

“We knew going into the game that Freedom was a good team,” she said. “Even though we lost, the coaching staff saw our girls play at a higher level than they ever have before. Our serve receive was great against them, we just need to work on sealing the net and executing ‘out of system’ plays.”

The Kids close out the week against perennial league contenders Whitehall and Parkland.

With the fast start, Finlayson is hoping that the one loss can pay dividends for the team down the road.

“The biggest message I want the girls to take from our first loss is, we played a very competitive game against a great team,” she said. “I’ve never seen a Northampton team play together and fight to win like I saw [Monday]. I hope to take this loss and learn from our mistakes in order to beat other high level teams in the valley.”

This week will start a rugged stretch for the Kids, as their next eight matches feature Whitehall, Parkland, Emmaus, Nazareth and Central Catholic - all the top teams in the EPC.
