Two take firsts

Liberty cross country runners Belle Weikert and Darlyn Fermin took first place in the Hurricanes’ meet against Pocono Mountain West, Pocono Mountain East, and Pleasant Valley last Tuesday at Pocono Mountain West.

Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom’s cross country teams also competed against the Pocono teams.

Weikert’s time was 19:32. Freedom’s Lauren Charboneau placed second in 20:09, Grace Haas (L) was third in 20:41, Greta Stuckey (L) was fourth in 20:52, and Mary Sweeney (F) placed fifth in 20:53.

Shannon Connolly (F) came in sixth in 21:16, Becahi’s Lauren Bunke was seventh in 21:21, Mary Frances Scheidel (B) placed eighth in 21:27, and Rachel Byrne (L) came in ninth in 21:48.

In girls’ team results, Becahi, Freedom, and Liberty defeated Pocono Mountain West, Pocono Mountain East, and Pleasant Valley, opening the season with records of 3-0.

In boys’ team results, Freedom and Liberty defeated Pocono Mountain West and Pocono Mountain East but lost to Pleasant Valley. Becahi defeated Pocono Mountain East but lost to Pocono Mountain West by one point and lost to Pleasant Valley.

Fermin’s winning time was 16:35. Cole Frank (L) took second place in 17:23, Freedom’s Kevin Pollock came in fifth in 17:30, Paul Jensen (L) was sixth in 17:39, and Becahi’s Aaron Smith was the first finisher for the Hawks in 30th place in 19:16.
