Pates upend Northampton

Getting a win in East Penn Conference football is a goal every week and that’s what Freedom was able to do in last week’s 26-13 home victory over Northampton.

The win pushed Freedom to 3-1 on the season and that was the most important take-away for head coach Jason Roeder.

“There’s plays where we can see how good we can be, but the attention to detail is missing a little bit,” said Roeder. “Moving forward we can’t expect to be as successful by making mistakes. It wasn’t always pretty at times, but give Northampton credit for that. They’re a much improved football team.”

Freedom led 13-7 after the first quarter and took that score into halftime after a couple special teams miscues, which saw them miss a PAT and have a botched field goal attempt.

Freedom extended their lead to 19-7 in third quarter when Jared Jenkins found Alec Huertas on a 27-yard TD pass with 4:11 in the period.

But turnovers put Freedom in tough spots in each half, as Jenkins threw two interceptions in the game, with his second one coming just before the third quarter came to a close, giving Northampton a fresh set of downs at Freedom’s 20.

It didn’t take long for the Kids to capitalize, as Hunter Wacik plunged in from two-yards out with 9:53 remaining in the game to make it 19-13.

The Pates answered right back on their ensuing drive, capped by an eight-yard TD run by Abdul Beasley with 5:12 left in the game.

Jenkins finished the night 17-of-32 for 298 yards and two touchdowns, along with the two picks, as Huertas led the Pates in receiving with seven catches for 107 yards and a TD.

Gabe Caton also hauled in a 65-yard TD strike in the first quarter for Freedom.

“You can’t turn the ball over the way we did and expect to be successful,” said Roeder. “We got to get better real quick for next week.”

This week’s challenge for the Patriots is taking on an undefeated Parkland (4-0) team, who mercy-ruled Easton 42-7 last week.
