K-Kids able to hang around with Patriots

After Northampton’s 24-7 win over Pleasant Valley, head coach Mark Scisly was well aware of who he needed to watch for in the K-Kids’ following game against Freedom.

“[Alec] Huertas is very good.”

The Patriots’ senior wide receiver justified Scisly’s fears in Freedom’s 26-13 victory on Sept. 15 at BASD Stadium. Huertas had seven catches for 107 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Patriots.

Freedom took a 6-0 lead on the game’s opening possession behind a two-yard touchdown run by Jalen Stewart, but Northampton would answer.

Quarterback John Smith converted a 3rd-and-10 pass to senior Zach Liggitt and Tyrese Brandon converted a 4th-and-goal from the one to give the K-Kids a 7-6 lead.

Freedom entered halftime with a 13-6 advantage following a 65-yard touchdown from quarterback Jared Jenkins to Gabe Caton. The Patriots would increase that lead to 19-6 on their first possession of the second half after a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins to Huertas.

Much like they did in the first half, the K-Kids had a response. Junior linebacker Falcon Kunkle intercepted Jenkins and returned it to the Freedom 20 yard line. Senior running back Hunter Wacik scored on a two-yard run to pull Northampton within a score.

Following a three-and-out by Freedom, Northampton got the ball back with a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter but Huertas again came up with the big play. His interception at midfield led to an eight-yard touchdown run by Abdul Beasley to seal the Freedom victory.

Liggitt finished with two receptions for 51 yards. Brandon had 73 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries. Wacik finished with 67 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Northampton (2-2) travels to Emmaus (2-2) on Friday, Sept. 22.
