Hawks beat Liberty

The last thing Bethlehem Catholic wanted was an overtime period in its game against Liberty, but a game-winning goal by Brooke Bisko and tough defense by the Hawks produced a 4-3 victory for Becahi, all within regulation, this past Monday.

“It’s exhilarating,” said Becahi defender and captain Samantha Gaydos. “Last season was so much different, and I think having losses is so much different than having five losses in overtime because to be that close and lose that many times...It’s redemption for us this year.”

Monday’s game at Becahi was actually a continuation of a game that began on Sept. 5 but was stopped after 22:39 of play because of a thunderstorm.

“We had so much less time [today], so to build up the intensity that we did was key to the win,” Gaydos said.

On Sept. 5, Becahi led 2-1 with goals scored by Sarah Knoble and Emma Carreras for the Hawks and Merve Okumus for the Hurricanes.

“When [Okumus] was running down the field, we were telling everyone to slow down the play and contain her because if you go too far at her, she’s going to flick around you and she’s going to cross it in,” said Gaydos.

It was Okumus who took the last shot on goal, but it was caught by Beca’s keeper Ellie Freiss.

“It’s definitely been a tough game to play, and in the last few minutes, it did get a little stressful when the ball came back,” Freiss said. “[At halftime] we talked about continuing to move as a team, and pushing up as a group, and not leaving gaps in our defense.”

So even though Bisko dribbled through multiple Hurricanes and scored what ended up being the last goal of the game with 25:02 left to play, it was defense that seemed to become the priority for the Hawks.

“Honestly, I didn’t really see what was going on. I kind of fell and then afterwards, when I got up I saw we scored a goal, and it was one of the best moments of my life,” Bisko said. “I think we were more on the defensive side [after that]. We did a really good job pushing up and pushing back as a team. It’s awesome, the best feeling ever.”

Bisko scored an earlier goal late in the first half. Liberty goals were scored by Madison Muller and Jess DelCorso.

Freiss made 5 saves for the Hawks, and Bridget MacDonald made 4 saves for the Hurricanes.
