’Canes suffer first loss
Liberty’s volleyball team has been taking down undefeated teams in successive fashion as of late, but the Hurricanes fell victim to that fate on Monday night.
Liberty (5-1) lost in four games to Nazareth (7-0), giving them first blemish of the season, after knocking off previously undefeated Whitehall and Emmaus last week.
“Every match is important and a new opportunity to improve,” said Lynn. “I’m not overly concerned about an undefeated regular season. We did that last year and it didn’t pan out in districts, so again, we will take this season one match at a time and hopefully playing these strong teams will give us an opportunity to improve our own weaknesses.”
Despite Monday’s loss, Liberty played well last week in a slate of tough contests.
“The Whitehall match gave us the boost we needed to come into [last] Friday’s match with Emmaus energized,” said Lynn. “We needed to be challenged and we needed to show some character to overcome a fired up effort from Whitehall.
“Beating Emmaus certainly made us feel confident that we can compete with the best in the conference, but we are taking this season one match at a time. We’ve had a few injuries and our senior middle hitter had to miss the match, so I’m proud of the girls for being able to switch lineups without losing their focus.”
With Easton (2-3) and Allen (0-7) on tap the rest of the week, Liberty will then look ahead to next week’s tilts with city rivals Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom.
Freedom (5-2) has won four straight matches, including Monday’s sweep over East Stroudsburg North.
The Patriots should extend that to five in Wednesday’s matchup with Allen, before taking on Becahi (4-2) on Friday.
The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday following a five game victory over Whitehall.
After getting swept by Emmaus and Nazareth last week, Monday’s victory provided a jolt for the program.
Becahi will look to stay on track Wednesday when they take on Dieruff (2-4).
